Left Bank purchase from the US

My wife and I decided early in 2026 to purchase an apartment in Paris and, being from the United States, weren't sure how to begin the process. Though my wife lived and studied years ago in Paris, and despite our several visits to the city as tourists, the local Parisian real estate market was not something we knew anything about. We knew we were interested in the Left Bank (5th, 6th, and 7th), but needed serious guidance. After a little research, I came across Home Select and its representative, Catherine Ziegler. After a few brief emails and a flurry of airline and hotel reservations, I flew to Paris in early June to search for the perfect place. I met Catherine the morning after I arrived in 107 degrees Farenheit (42 degrees Celsius). Undaunted, she had arranged for at least eight apartment visits over each of the next several days. Though we had told her generally what we were looking for, she seemed to know exactly the right neighborhood, look, and feel of what we wanted. She was exceptionally knowledgeable about the area, it's streets, shopping, restaurants, etc. She is, after all, a local resident. After a few days of searching, and revisiting a few places, I had made a decision. After a few days of discussion, we made an offer and, I'm happy to say, we closed on our dream apartment in the 6th late in September. I cannot recommend Catherine and her organization highly enough. She made the process easy and painless. I learned more about the neighborhoods I was interested in than I could have imagined. It was obvious that her relationship with the various sellers' brokers was a very good one. I highly recommend any buyer of real estate in Paris who is not a true "local" to use Catherine and her company for advice and recommendations. They were helpful, honest, and highly knowledgable regarding the real estate market, the legal home buying process, and the neighborhoods in general. In sum, an extremely positive experience.

The French process holds a few surprises for American buyers: a preliminary contract (compromis de vente) that commits both parties early, a statutory cooling-off period for the buyer, then the final deed (acte authentique) signed before a notaire, the public officer who checks the title and handles the funds. Mission accomplished

It is difficult to express how essential Catherine and Ladan were to our wish to buy an apartment in Paris. Buying any property can be difficult, but it is especially so if you do not live in France (we live in Texas). Catherine and Ladan made the process easy: after a thorough initial interview where they really took the time to understand our wants and needs, they were off. Within just a few short months, they had given us FaceTime tours of multiple apartments that fitted our budget and goals. More importantly, they didn't just present apartments; rather, they toured and walked through the neighbourhood and gave us their opinions and advice on not just the building and the apartment, but the area and what life would be like in those apartments. As well as finding the apartment, the entire sale process was made easy by them. And then post-sale, Ladan was absolutely AMAZING!! She helped us find a contractor and oversaw the renovations we wanted. Her interior design skills were also unbelievable: she stuck to our budget and helped beautifully furnish our apartment in the classic Parisian style we were after. We truly could not have fulfilled our dream without them, and now we have a lovely 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment in the 16th that we (and our family and friends) love and use frequently.

Bilingual expertise

Buying an apartment in Paris can be a complicated process, especially if you're not from France and don't speak the language. We were fortunate to work with Home Select, who specialize in helping international buyers through every step. She wasn't just an estate agent, she was a hands-on guide who made everything easier. She helped us understand different neighbourhoods and what kind of property and price made sense for our needs. She arranged viewings, gave clear feedback on each option and explained local practices we wouldn't have known otherwise. Once we found the place, she helped us select and work with a notary, handled paperwork, clarified what costs to expect and coordinated all the formal steps. After the purchase, her help didn't stop. She assisted in getting utilities (like electricity and internet) set up, helped us find a security system, and handled many practical things you only notice after the sale. She even took care of local calls and follow-ups we couldn't easily do ourselves. If you're planning to buy a property in Paris and want someone who really knows how to help buyers, I can't recommend her highly enough. It would have been very difficult without her.
